„Troublesome time“: Ahmed Sofa’s Letter to Peter Dietzel

The letter dated 19 May 1991 reveals Ahmed Sofa in a personal, almost searching state for self-assurance, caught between literary ambition and the realities of life. Writing from Dhaka to Peter Dietzel, he expresses his gratitude for support and emotional closeness, whilst at the same time describing his own situation as one of being overburdened, distracted and inwardly exhausted. Sofa reflects on literature, cultural misunderstandings and his own writings, hoping for a response within the German context. In doing so, his critical view of society, ideologies and the cultural scene repeatedly comes to the fore. The letter is at once a working document, an expression of friendship and a snapshot of an author caught between commitment, doubt and creative drive.
